Pulling together to create the highest standards to maximize student achievement is the ultimate goal of the staff and parents. We would like to encourage our students by providing intellectual stimulation that will result in lifelong learning and instill a respect for cultural diversity. Westwood Charter Elementary School Westwood Charter School is alive with a productive, focused energy which can be felt by all who enter. We are committed to the celebration of the uniqueness of each child and the total school atmosphere reflects this commitment. The Westwood staff strives to provide opportunities which allow each child to reach full academic and social potential. We recognize that the development of a strong and positive self-concept is fundamental to successful learning. Experiences which foster self-concept development are woven throughout the curriculum. The curricular program is well-rounded and interdisciplinary. Language Arts and Social Studies provide a strong foundation which touches all other areas. The curriculum is process oriented, "hands-on," and experiential. Critical thinking skills are developed through problem solving experiences, discussions and activities designed to teach and strengthen higher level thinking skills. The student body is a wholly integrated, multi-ethnic school family. This diversity in population provides us all with a rich and firsthand experience in multicultural education--and one we can all grow from and enjoy. Westwood is a school with a strong sense of community. Parents are integrally involved in all aspects of the school program. The School Based Management Team is the governing body of the school. This Team is comprised of teachers, parents, administrative and classified staff working together to initiate, manage and evaluate our ongoing plans to improve student achievement. The sense of community is strong, and growing. The Staff and I fervently hope that our children will learn to protect and respect the Earth on which we live, respect the contributions all people make to our world, and be productive citizens able to meet the challenges they encounter.
