Who We Are
Palisades Charter High School, a comprehensive four year high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, is located in Pacific Palisades in West Los Angeles. In 1993, a Charter School petition which specified accountability for higher levels of student achievement was approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District and the State Department of Education. The Charter School Program is being phased in by adding a grade level each year. Full conversion to Palisades Charter High School occurred in 1996-97. In 1994, a Mathematics, Science, and Technology Magnet Program was added. Palisades High School and Charter High School are fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) until 2000.
In the early 1990's, under the leadership of Principal Merle Price, every teacher and classified staff at Palisades High elected to become the first high school in the District to become a LEARN school. Since then, Palisades Charter High has experienced tremendous growth and has become a successful example of school reinvention.
The purpose of LEARN is "to mobilize Los Angeles' diverse communities and their leadership to advocate and support the implementation of the LEARN plan to restructure the Los Angeles Unified School District, thereby increasing the autonomy and accountability of local school sites to dramatically improve the academic achievement for all our children."
Today, Palisades High offers a number of programs and opportunities, and has been very successful at procuring corporate resources in support. For example, an entertainment academy, supported by employees from the Hollywood Radio and Television Society train teachers in the entertainment field and share the latest technology, information, and practices used in the industry. A computer lab donated by Aaron Spelling productions is also available for the students, among other resources.
Palisades High now supports a diverse body of 2,420 students representing over 40 languages and 107 zip codes throughout Los Angeles--our waiting list is now at 600 students! Pali High boasts a 75% pass rate on AP exams, an increase in attendance rate and an SAT average above the California average.
Academic Programs
Many innovative academic programs have been developed that offer students at Palisades Charter High School a wide range of opportunities.
Math, Science, Technology Magnet
Students have the opportunity to use computers and learn the technological sciences to enhance the learning process in all subject areas including mathematics, science, language arts and social studies. They also explore the various professional careers available in engineering, computer technology and other science-based disciplines.
Humanitas Program
Humanitas is an interdisciplinary, thematic program. Art, history and literature teachers integrate their instruction around a central theme, actively involving each student in a learning process that teaches them to think more broadly. Humanitas is offered in grades 9 through 12.
Integrated Mathematics
Integrated Mathematics is designed to help students explore and solve mathematical problems in the areas of algebra, geometry, logic, probability, statistics, discrete math and functions. Students will learn to think critically, work together and communicate ideas which are important skills for today's workforce.
Honors and Advanced Placement Programs
The honors program is designed to serve those students exhibiting a record of continuing superior academic achievement. Classes are offered in English, foreign language, mathematics, science, social studies and the visual arts.
Advanced Placement classes, like the Honors program classes, are designed to provide a rigorous academic challenge. Advanced Placement classes can provide college credit if a student demonstrates superior ability by achieving a 3, 4, or 5 score on the National Advanced Placement Exams.
Fine Arts, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts
All students are offered the opportunity to participate in drama, play production, the Fall Drama Festival, the Spring Musical, the Shakespeare Festival, orchestra, Madrigals, and band. Classes in photography, drawing, painting, and ceramics are also available. All ninth grade students experience visual and performing arts in a new elective offered for one semester.
New Media Entertainment Academy
The New Media Entertainment Academy Project is a partnership venture begun by Workforce LA, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, and the Los Angeles Unified School District. The program fosters the creativity and invention that our students need in order to pose and solve problems through video production technology and the new animation lab. A team of teachers, including academic teachers, work together in order to coordinate curriculum and develop projects where students learn subject matter through application. Students are mentored and can qualify for internships in the entertainment industry in their junior and senior years. All classes will meet university entrance requirements, and students will be encouraged to pursue post-secondary education.
Community Service
Palisades Charter High School requires each student to perform community service. We believe that when students become involved in serving others, they become more productive, independent and responsible citizens. The requirements are to complete a project of approximately ten hours each year in grades 9 through 12. The Community Service projects are placed in student portfolios and in the senior year are evaluated as part of the graduation portfolio.
Academic Competition Teams
Palisades Charter High School students compete in four academic competition teams: The Academic Decathlon, Debate, Mock Trial and Math Teams. While all of these teams are fiercely competitive and highly successful, the Academic Decathlon Team has been unusually outstanding. Palisades has earned the reputation as having one of the elite teams in the city, winning the city competition five years out of the last thirteen!

Parent Involvement
Governance Council
The Governance Council meets monthly to determine policy for Palisades Charter High School, which is made in the areas of strategic planning, budgets, scheduling, graduation requirements, curriculum, admissions policy, discipline, as well as requests for District waivers. The CouncilÑwhich consists of six parents or community members, the Principal, two classified employees, two student and eleven faculty membersÑconsiders the recommendations of the subcommittees which meet at various times during the month. Each year three parents are elected for two year commitments. With the exception of the Principal, all members and alternates are elected by their constituency. Parent representatives are expected to attend monthly Council meetings, as well as participate on subcommittees. During the school year the parent representatives organize meetings for the parent body. The Governance Council meets at 7:00 P.M. on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
All parents are welcome to attend council meetings. Parents may also join subcommittees that deliberate on curriculum, budgets, hiring, and strategic planning. For time and location of the subcommittee meetings, please contact the the main office.
PTSA - Parent Teacher Student Association
The PTSA at Pali High is open to all parents, teachers, and students, and is operated by an Executive Board with several committees. The PTSA coordinates activities such as the monthly Principal's Newsletter mailings, and hosts luncheons, dinners, and receptions for the school community. In general, the PTSA oversees volunteers for the school, including classrooms, offices, and school activities which are not covered by the other organizations.
The monthly PTSA meeting is on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 9:00 A.M. in the Library. Each meeting provides an update about what has happened and will be happening at the school, and offers a time for upcoming event planning.
Palisades High School Booster Club, Inc. and Palisades High School Educational Partners
The purpose of the Booster Club is to raise money for Pali High, the Charter High School, and the Math Science Technology Magnet, to identify and prioritize the needs, and to allocate the available funds. In addition to money raised to support specific departments and the General Fund, many of the sports teams channel their donations through the Booster Club to take advantage of their accounting system and their tax deductible, nonprofit status. The Booster Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in the Pali High Library. Every parent is a member and is encouraged to come and participate. Nine directors are elected by the membership each year at the June meeting.
